At MIS Key Stage One refers to Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, this means children from the age of 5 to 7.
In the Reception Year our children build upon the skills and experiences they have encountered during the Foundation Stage. The learning is still based in a largely social atmosphere and through guided play, but more formal lessons in literacy and numeracy are gradually introduced. Therefore providing pupils with excellent preparation and grounding for the more formal learning environment that they will encounter in Years One and Two.
Years 1 & 2
In Years 1 and 2 our children build upon the skills and experiences they have encountered during the Foundation Stage and Reception. Gradually, by maintaining a social atmosphere and a carefully monitored, formal curriculum, children are introduced to a full range of subjects by the end of Year Two.
Classes are kept to a maximum of twenty-two children. This enables teachers to monitor each pupil's progress, providing enrichment and support on an individual basis.
Physical activities play an important role with the children enjoying a PE,games or swimming lesson session every week. We also have a specialist music teacher to provide children with basic music skills and ICT teacher to provide children with essential computer skills. All children receive one hour of Portuguese tuition from a Portuguese teacher every week. These lessons are offered on two levels, beginners and advanced. We also have a dedicated teacher of English enrichment classes for children who need support in adapting to English as their primary language of learning.
In Key Stage One we aim to:

- Prepare children to embrace the challenges and achievements that they will encounter as they develop.
- Educate and encourage children to live in a way that will lead to good health for life.
- Encourage children to be independent and develop good learning habits.
- Inspire all children to be creative learners.
- Promote kindness to others and embrace our differences and similarities, irrespective of gender, religion, ability, race or cultural background.
- Provide a broad and balanced curriculum responding appropriately to the diverse emotional, cultural and learning experiences of our children.
