LANGUAGE & LEARNING SUPPORT CENTRE

ABOUT THE LANGUAGE CENTRE

The Maputo International School Language and Learning Support Centre (Language Centre) supports the teaching of English and Portuguese languages throughout the school. Its main focus is to support new comers to the school to develop the academic literacy skills in English, which is the common language in our school. The Language Centre does so flexibly in accordance with the needs of its learners.

Its teachers are all highly qualified language instructors; they design and execute content-based English language lessons for learners in primary or secondary settings. They focus on reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE IN KS1& 2

Learners in KS1&2 (Reception to Year 6) who join Maputo International School with limited English language proficiency receive Special English lessons depending on their level of ability which is determined by the placement assessment test of the Language Centre.

The emphasis of the Language Centre Special English support programme is to promote academic English proficiency that will enable learners to access the mainstream curriculum as quickly as possible.

The Special English instructors work in active collaboration with the class teacher as well as other specialist teachers to support learners.

Withdrawal support –This programme consists on pulling out learners with lower level of proficiency from their mainstream classes to the special English rooms for foundational language support.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE IN KS3 & 4

ESL in secondary school (Yrs. 7 - 9) is done differently. The lessons are aligned with the English language lessons. When learners move to secondary school their English language proficiency is determined by an assessment programme system. ESL learners in Years 7 to 9 are allocated in one of the three different classes in accordance of their stage of proficiency. In Year 10-13, ESL students are placed into two different groups. If learners have strong enough English they are allowed to exit the ESL program and join the normal English language and literature

NEW COURSES OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

The language Centre provides English and Portuguese courses for staff members and parents of Maputo International School. In addition to offering teaching directly to specific learners, the Centre has recently started providing courses to the general public. At the moment, the centre has English and Portuguese Courses on offer to the public
